Founded in 2021 by Darryn Frost and Steve Gallant, Own Merit CIC began with a mission to address the prison-leaver homelessness crisis safely and cost-effectively.
The hybrid approach offered by Own Merit is evidence-based and resident-led. Research into several unique resettlement programmes inspired the model. Own Merit takes learning from various projects and direct input from residents.
The first hybrid "Supportive Living" home was launched in the heart of Northampton, where Own Merit provides the foundation and tools for success. Residents manage the household democratically and are expected to commit to the programme, embrace the community-led approach, and work towards their future while supporting fellow residents in doing the same.
Over time, we have expanded our focus to support care leavers. With around 30% of prisoners having been in care, it makes sense to "go upstream" and work with people in care and support them so they do not find themselves entangled with the Justice System and the additional disadvantage and stigma that comes with it.
Our methodology is simple. We create a safe home and a support community so that each person can feel settled and secure. Then we work with them to identify their skills, abilities and hopes for the future. We assist them by setting goals and supporting them throughout. Ultimately, we aim for each resident to move on confident and equipped to live an independent and fulfilling life.
